Soccer team advances

By Michael Butler

The Tallassee soccer team is moving on to the second round of the playoffs. The Tigers grabbed a 5-0 triumph over Demopolis at J.E. "Hot" O'Brien Stadium on Monday. It was the first playoff win in program history. They will host Brewbaker Tech on Friday.

Tallassee improved to 19-4-4 on the season and have not lost a match since Feb. 27. The Tigers remain perfect at home.

"(We've) made history for Tallassee soccer," said head coach Matthew Tarpley. "Getting two home playoff games in Tallassee was kind of the goal."

Irvin Delfin and Yuren Rodriguez scored two goals apiece. Francisco Diego added the other THS score. Delfin now has 62 goals this season ranking him sixth all-time among those in the AHSAA record book.

"It's a testament to him and his teammates. He's not out there by himself. His teammates get him great balls to work with and he's able to find the back of the net."

A win on Friday would put Tallassee in the Field of Four in Huntsville next week.

"We're excited," Tarpley added. "It's nice to be here. The boys understand there's work to be done. They feel they can get to the finals. I believe we have the talent and the team to get to the finals. We've got to go out and execute."

The match with Rams on Friday, May 3 will start at 6:30 p.m. Tallassee and Brew Tech have played three times this season with the Tigers winning twice with one game ending in a tie.
