The stakes were high. The winner of Thursday's varsity boys soccer match between Tallassee and Brewbaker Tech in Montgomery would take sole possession of first place in the Class 5A/Area 3 race.

Tallassee took care of business winning 2-0 improving to 7-4-2 overall and 3-0 in area play.

All-state junior Irvin Delfin scored both THS goals in a game that was not pretty according to Tallassee head coach Matthew Tarpley.

"My boys did not play well and still won," he said. "(We're) 3-0 in the area and in the driver's seat."

The win avenged a couple of one-goal setbacks to the Rams last year that ultimately kept Tallassee's best team record-wise out of the playoffs.

Now the Tigers get time off for Spring Break. The next match is March 26 against Russell County.

Class 5A/Area 3 Standings
Tallassee 3-0
Brewbaker Tech 3-1
Elmore County 1-2
Beauregard 1-2
Valley 0-3
