Classic this weekend
By Michael Butler
The Capital City Classic returns for the 11th year, this weekend in Montgomery. The annuall show choir event is put on by the Tallassee High School Music Department.
Jerry Cunningham still coordinates the showcase to this day, which has grown each year.
"We have 41 choirs that will be participating," Cunningham said. "We have schools from Tennessee, Georgia, Florida and Alabama. Mississippi has a big competition that weekend, so we very seldom have a group of Mississippi to come.
"Some of the schools are utterly fantastic. Most are from Alabama; Auburn, Homewood, Hoover, Vestavia, Albertville, Tift County from Georgia."
Tallassee will also perform with its different groups (Divas, Gold Edition, New Image) but not be graded in the competition as the host school. The Montgomery Performing Arts Centre serves as the venue again, as it has for the first decade of competitions.

"People say it would be great for you to have it here. We don't have the facility to host something like that. Counting everybody involved and everybody who comes, there will be about 5,000 people who will come through counting performers."
Performances begin at 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 25 and 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26.
