Wrestling season begins

The Tallassee wrestling team opened its season on Saturday with the Tallassee Duals Christmas Tournament. The Tigers placed third. Moody took first place. Saint James was the runner-up.

In the first match, Tallassee beat Reeltown in the inaugural meeting between the programs. The Rebels are launching wrestling this year. Tallassee won 72-12. Tallassee fell to Moody 37-32. The Tigers topped Elmore County 60-18 and Prattville Christian 56-21 to finish out the day.

Head coach John Mask is also a football assistant. The transition from sports is always an adjustment for Mask's football/wrestling athletes.

"It takes about two or three weeks," he said. "Normally I'd like more time to get in shape, but the kids are going to get in shape by wrestling. Going six minutes on the mat is a little different type of being in shape."

There are about ten wrestlers that are on the varsity and junior varsity squads (7th - 12th grade).

"We have 41 or 42. I've still got a few guys I'm trying to get out," Mask said. "The kids have been working hard."
