4 wrestlers statebound

By Michael Butler

Tallassee will have four wrestlers attending the AHSAA State Championships in Huntsville this week. Land Bell, Brendan Emfinger, Bry Hathcock and Christian McCary are the qualifiers.

Tallassee was 14th out of 30 teams at last weekend's AHSAA Class 5A/6A South Sectional at Garrett Coliseum in Montgomery. McAdory finished first.

"We had an awesome weekend of wrestling," head coach John Mask said. "Our wrestlers competed and gave their all at the sectional tournament.

"We have four young men who qualified this year and we are so proud of them and all of their hard work. We had 10 other young men who were all a match or two away from qualifying."

Bell was the top placer among THS wrestlers, finishing third in the 132-pound class. McCary was fifth in the 160-pound class. Emfinger (120) and Hathcock (126) were each eighth in their divisions.

Combining the 5A and 6A classifications made reaching the state level a bit more of a daunting task than in past years.

"When you are wrestling in a 32-man bracket, earning a top eight finish is very tough," Mask added. "I am so proud of each and every one of our young men. We have had an amazing year, one of the best in our history. Each one of these young men played an important part in that accomplishment."

Tallassee will travel to the Rocket City on Wednesday night. Competition begins on Thursday.
