Wrestlers off to hot start, beach trip scratched

By Michael Butler

After beating Opelika on Thursday 45-33, the Tallassee wrestling team has completed the first month of the season with a flawless record in dual matches. The team is 13-0.

"We have really wrestled well to start the season," head coach John Mask said. "We have managed to deal with injuries and still compete at a high level. Numerous young men have stepped up when someone has been sick or injured. It truly has been a team effort for the first half of the season.

"Each wrestler on the team has played an important role in our success. The coaching staff has been very happy with everyone's attitude and work ethic."

Due to Covid protocols last season, the "Beast at the Beach" tournament was canceled. It returns in 2021 at Fort Walton Beach, Fla., but due to a positive case of the flu on the Tallassee squad, the Tigers are opting out.

"We are going to stay at home instead of putting the kids in a hotel together right before Christmas," Mask said.

The next scheduled matches will be in 2022. Tallassee will host the first round of the AHSAA Region Duals on Jan. 8 and 9.
