Strong second half leads Hornets back past Tallassee
By Michael Butler
Tallassee jumped out to its first lead of the 2023 season, but it did not hold up. Beauregard beat the Tigers 35-14 in a Class 5A/Region 4 matchup on Friday night at J. E. "Hot" O'Brien Stadium.
The first two THS drives could not have been better - resulting in touchdowns in an early 14-0 advantage. It was Tallassee's first points of the first half after three games; however, Beauregard scored five unanswered touchdowns in grabbing the victory.
Tallassee head coach Mike Battles was pleased with his team's effort and its improvement.
"We got better," Battles said. "We just ran out of gas. We're playing a lot of kids. We're asking them to do a lot. They're young. They're learning."
Trent Morris, a freshman making his first start at quarterback, drove the Tigers down the field on the opening drive and scored on a 13-yard run for a 7-0 lead. On the next possession, Joseph Hooks scored on a 39-yard jaunt to make it 14-0 in the first quarter.
Hooks had a career-best 110 yards on eight touches in addition to a 14-yard reception.
Tallassee was in front 14-7 at halftime, but was held scoreless in the second half. Beauregard quarterback Cub Jones threw three touchdown passes, all to Javonn Holman who finished the game with 139 receiving yards.
"Beauregard's got a real talented team," said Battles. "We're going to keep practicing, keep working. Something good is going to happen. Hopefully, it'll be next week."
The Hornets improved to 3-1 and 1-1 in region play. Tallassee fell to 0-4 and 0-2.
"I know to the common eye we lost 35-14," Battles added, "but I saw a lot of improvement in our blocking, throwing the ball, our receivers running routes and our defense at times.
"We ain't going to quit. We've got a lot of football left to play. It's not in Tallassee to quit. This is tough for the kids because they hear all the nonsense, but our kids have done well and I'm proud of them."
This week's game at Marbury will kick off at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs are 1-3 on the season. Airtime on WTLS/Score 94.7/Hit 106.9 will be at 6. Audio will be simulcast on Spectrum Cable Channel 340. Video streaming is available on Tallassee Times TV through YouTube.
