Tigers cap 9-1 regular season with win over rival

By Gary Buchanan

Tallassee overcame four turnovers and a sluggish first half to defeat Elmore County 34–10 on Friday night. The win improved the Tigers record to 9-1 overall, the best regular season record since 2010. It also secured a home game for the first round of the playoffs.

Tallassee dominated the game in the first quarter. Two lost fumbles at the Panther goal line prevented the Tigers from staking a commanding lead. Instead, Elmore County put the first points on the board with a 22-yard Joseph Stockman field goal.

Tallassee got on the scoreboard as Tavarious Griffin tackled D.J. Patrick in the end zone for a safety. That safety was the first play from scrimmage following another Tallassee fumble near the goal line.

Casey Baynes scored the first touchdown of the night on a one-yard plunge. The Panthers answered with a 57-yard run for a touchdown by D. J. Patrick. Just before halftime, Quinton Jeter put the Tigers ahead for good with a 25-yard field goal.

Tallassee took control in the second half. Kalvin Levett scored on runs of 6 and 41 yards. Markevious Matthews added a six-yard touchdown run of his own. Levett finished the night with 171 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns. His performance earned him the Spectrum Player of the Game honors.

Coach Mike Battles was not happy going into halftime. “We had some self-inflicted problems with penalties and turnovers. Coach Randolph reminded me that even though we’d fumbled four times and given up one big play on defense, we were still winning 13-10.”

Tallassee is off this final week of the regular season. They will host Thomasville on Friday, Nov. 10 in first round playoff action.
