Baseball season ends in Munford

By Michael Butler

The Tallassee High School baseball season has come to a close. The Tigers were swept at Munford 4-0 and 9-4 in the first round of the state playoffs last weekend.

In game one, THS left 12 runners on base and committed three errors, one that involved shortstop Jake Burton colliding with a field umpire. It kind of summed up the Tigers' day.

Parker Neighbors took the loss. Two of the four runs were unearned. He struck out four and walked four.

Casey Baynes was 2-for-2 with a double. Reese Graham was also 2-for-2. Zak Haynes, Jackson Gantt and Tanner McNaughten added two hits each as Tallassee outhit the Lions 9 to 5 in the setback.

In game two, Munford jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first against starter Jake Burton. Burton struck out five and walked two in the loss. He pitched five innings allowing eight runs, five earned. Beau Baker pitched the final two innings giving up another run. He struck out three and issued no walks.

The Tigers cut the lead to 5-4 in the third but left the bases loaded in the fourth on an inning-ending double play. Munford added some security with a three-spot in the fifth. The Lions never trailed in the series.

Kalvin Levett had two hits including a double in the nightcap. Haynes and Graham added two more singles apiece for the Tigers who ended their season with a 16-14 record.

Tallassee graduates will be signing letters of intent on Monday, May 7 at 11 a.m. in the Tallassee High School Auditorium. Casey Baynes (Southern Union), Jake Burton (LBW) and Parker Neighbors (LBW) will be extending their playing days at the college level.
