Local Tie to “Butter and Grit”

By Michael Butler

Sometimes, you have just one chance to make an impression. For Laurel Taunton Taylor it was about three minutes.

“They say three minutes will change your life,” said Taylor, also known as “Grit” in the music duo Butter and Grit.

Taylor and Luke “Butter” Michael made the most of their opportunity. With millions watching on television, the tandem performed Sweet South on “America’s Got Talent” and got four yeses from the celebrity panel in Pasadena, Calif.

Taylor is a 2012 Tallassee High School graduate who has spent her time since graduation in Nashville, also known as “Music City.”

“I was about to quit when I met Luke,” she said. “I was like, we’ve got to do this together. That brought me a new energy.”

Michael is from Ohio. He came up with the name Butter and Grit.

“I said “Biscuit and Gravy.” Nobody wants to be gravy,” he quipped. “So, I was like why don’t we do Butter and Grit. She was like, ‘That’s the stupidest name I’ve ever heard. Let’s do it.’”

Now, people all across America are learning more about Butter and Grit.

‘This is crazy,” Taylor said. “People are sharing it. It’s been really cool to see everybody’s reaction.”

America’s Got Talent airs on NBC Tuesdays at 7 p.m.

“Keep watching,” Michael said. “It’s an exciting process. It does eventually end up being up to America. If we get the chance to compete for that live vote, we do need everyone to support us. You never know what will happen.”
