The Tallassee Chamber of Commerce held its annual awards banquet at the National Guard Armory on March 2. The ceremony included dinner catered by 1220 Cafe and the distribution of plaques to those who have made an impact in the Tallassee community.
The Business of the Year was given to Monster Mountain. The 280-acre motor sports park opened in 2000. Monster Mountain president Keith Kingsfield accepted the award.
“We’re honored,” said Kingsfield. “The sport of motocross isn’t just what we do. It’s an engine that drives tourism, economic growth and opportunity for our community. Through Monster Mountain, we’ve worked hard to put Tallassee on the national map, bringing riders and families here from across the country. This award belongs to the people who support local business and believe in what this town can become.”

The Francis Wagnon Volunteer of the Year recipient was Jerry Cunningham. Cunningham served as the Chamber of Commerce director from 2017 until last year.
“I’ve been fortunate to have a lot of really good people to work with,” Cunningham said. “The bottom line is to work with the community.”

The Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Dale Segrest. The former judge and attorney was recognized at the event by his son Mike Segrest, who now serves as district attorney of the 5th judicial circuit.
“Receiving the award was a great honor and a total surprise,” Segrest said. “I thought I was there in support of my son Mike. Instead, I was there to hear him tell the story of my life and hand me the trophy. Life is good.”

Chamber president Dustin Funderburk gave the President’s Choice Award to Barry Adair, executive director of A.C.T.S.
“That award was very much appreciated and unexpected,” Adair said. “I have to give credit to every volunteer for making the A.C.T.S. ministry possible.”

“Making A Difference” awards were given to Ann Christian, Rev. Rick Dorley, Coach John Mask and Audra Speaks.
