Centennial birthday celebration planned

By Suzannah Solomon Wilson

Friends and family are invited to celebrate a special lady in Tallassee.

Mrs. Lueverne Simmons turned 100 on Nov. 25 and there will be a special party for her on Sunday, Dec. 5.

Everyone is invited to drop by Suzannah’s Photography studio at 305 James Street in Tallassee and say “Happy Birthday.”  The event is from 1 - 3 p.m.

Lueverne Simmons was born in Elmore County on Nov. 25, 1921.

Her mother, Mary Butler, raised four daughters, Lueverne and her sisters, Fannie Mae Splunge, Susie McConagha, and Roberta Adams.  Mrs. Simmons’ sisters are all deceased.

Lueverne was married to Alex Simmons and they had two daughters, Sherrell Denmark and Frances Leonard (deceased).  She has two grandchildren who are the loves of her life, Sharae Denmark Canady and Clifford Leonard.

Mrs. Simmons spent many years as a babysitter for babies and children in her community.

She is a longtime member of Chehaw AME Zion Church in Tuskegee where she serves as an honorary usher.

Mrs. Simmons enjoys taking care of her flowers and tending to her garden that she created from the ground up.  Even today, at 100, she loves to work in her gardens.

Besides gardening, she loves to cook and her specialty is homemade biscuits.

Those attending are asked to wear a mask.
