The May 24 primary is a wrap. Gov. Kay Ivey ran away with the Republican victory without the need for a runoff despite having eight opponents in the GOP race. There will be a runoff in the U.S. Senate race between Katie Britt and Mo Brooks.
Locally, those high profile races followed suit with Ivey and Britt as the frontrunners. For Tallassee mayor Johnny Hammock, his run at statewide office came up short. Hammock was third among four candidates in the Alabama Public Service Commission Place 1 race.
Hammock topped Brent Woodall, incumbent Jeremy Oden and Stephen McClamb among Tallassee voters, but it is Oden and Woodall who will be on the ballot for the June 21 runoff.
Oden got 34 percent of the vote to Woodall's 31 percent. Hammock received 24 percent and McLamb 11 percent.
Hammock received 300 votes total at Tallassee's three boxes, 36 percent of the city's total count. In his election for mayor in August of 2020, he received 612 votes (52 percent).
Tallassee attorney Mike Segrest won in his bid for district attorney in the 5th judicial circuit encompassing Tallapoosa, Macon, Chambers and Randolph Counties. Segrest beat incumbent Jeremy Duerr 55 to 45 percent.
Numbers were down in Tallassee compared to the 2020 presidential election. Over 2,500 turned out for that race. There were 1,171 who voted for mayor in that same year. Only 960 voted in all on Tuesday; 668 in Tallaweka, 261 in East Tallassee and just 31 in Jordanville.
