Gospel concert kicks off MCAC season

By Michael Butler

The Mt. Vernon Gospel Homecoming returns on Saturday, Aug. 20 featuring 13 musical acts. The event begins at 6 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Tallassee and is the season opener for the McCraney-Cottle Arts Council.

"We didn't get to do it last year," MCAC executive director Jerry Cunningham said. "It's a whole night of southern gospel music. We've got quite a lineup."

That lineup is headllined by Mark Lanier.

"Mark lives in Louisiana now," Cunningham added. "He was a full-time gospel artist in the group Perfect Heart. He now has a solo career. He's an Eclectic native."

Local favorite Harlan Burton will also perform along with several other local artists. The program will be emceed by Michael Bird and Michael Scarborough.

"We'll do it homecoming style. There's very little talking. It's singing."

Tickets are $20 each.

"You'll get your money's worth," said Cunningham, who will peform in the production himself. "It's been well attended. We just haven't been able to do it the last couple of years."

Among the future shows on the MCAC season schedule include the Auburn Singers and Missoula Children's Theatre. Cunningham noted that another addition is still in the works.

"I don't want to say what. If we can make it work, it will be really positive for the community."

Tickets for the show Saturday may be purchased at the door.
