Homecoming this week
By Michael Butler
It's homecoming week in Tallassee. It is also fall break for Tallassee students, who are out of school on Monday with a virtual day on Tuesday before returning to classrooms.
"It started off with a bang Sunday night," Tallassee City Schools Superintendent Dr. Brock Nolin said of one of the homecoming traditions regarding toilet paper. "They have the extra-curricular activities they enjoy doing in everybody's yards. It'll be a long week for me and the teachers and the kids, but everybody enjoys it."
Businesses are painting their storefronts in purple and gold, while students and faculty will be decked out in their school colors as well.
"I'm looking forward to seeing this returning class. That's what makes it special," Nolin said. "This is the first class that I actually taught when I came to Tallassee 20 years ago."
The Class of 2005 will take over the pep rally on Friday morning at the high school in addition to taking part in several other traditional festivities including riding the 'old folks' float in the parade.
"When I came here, Mr. Carl Stewart said, 'Mr. Nolin, you've not experienced anything like Tallassee homecoming.' He was right."
Nolin is an alum of Eufaula High School, whose homecoming was much different.
"All you had was a homecoming parade. A little bit of rolling went on. That was it."
The candlelight ceremony and bonfire will be at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24 at the high school. The pep rally kicks off at approximately 8:15 on Friday morning. An early release for students will be at noon on Friday. The parade will begin at 2 and remain on the west side of the city. Pregame festivities on Friday night start around 6:15 with the recognition of class representatives and the crowning of the queen. Tallassee plays Talladega afterwards with a kickoff of 7.
