Cottle

Cottle was longtime columnist/host

Staff Report

Pete Cottle was known by many locals for his decades of service in print and broacast media. He passed away last week at 74.

Cottle wrote the weekly "Dirty Digs" column for the Tallassee Tribune. He spent 22 years as host of the daily "What's Going On" radio show on WACQ.

"Pete was a true southern gentleman; a good family man, always polite and courteous to everyone," WACQ owner Randall Hughey said. "When he was personnel director at Tallassee Mills, he gave me my first real job. He and I were close friends from that day on, some 47 years.

"In the 22 years that we worked together at WACQ, we never had an argument or disagreement. He cared greatly for Tallassee and felt that he was making it a better place by appearing each morning on his radio show and letting his many listeners know "What Was Going On." He was a local icon. Everybody in the Tallassee area knew his name and most knew him personally. I would say that he left his mark in this world and will go down in Tallassee’s history as one of the great personalities of our time."

Cottle was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Tallassee and a former Rotarian.

Services were held at First Baptist on Sunday with Jeffcoat Funeral Home directing.
