Soccer season kicks off with a bang

By Michael Butler

The Tallassee soccer team dominated in its season opener with a 10-0 win over Sidney Lanier at J. E. "Hot" O'Brien Stadium on Tuesday. Will Blocker led the way with five goals and two assists. The game lasted just 41 minutes due to the mercy rule.

"I'm really proud of how we played," Blocker said. "Starting the season off with a big win is awesome and I'm really looking forward to the rest of the season."

Blocker's five scores is believed to be a THS record.

Terrel Brown served as the program's first coach from 2008-2012.

"I do not believe we had any player do that during the time that I was coaching," Brown said of Blocker's feat. "That's awesome."

Katie (Hayley) Rigsby coached from 2013-2019 and concurred.

"I think Fernando Marcos scored four," she said, "but it's probably a record."

Current coach Keiven Mixson began coaching the soccer team in 2020.

"Yes," he exclaimed after the win. "(It's) a good confidence builder."

Irvin Delfin and Raul Jiminez netted two goals a piece. Jonathan Wright also scored on goal. Delfin, Alec Carswell and Clay Johnson each had assists.

"The team had a great preseason," assistant coach Matthew Tarpley added. "We're putting the work in to the best Tallassee soccer team ever."

Tallassee's next match will be at home vs. Robert E. Lee on Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 5:30 p.m.
