Tigers win Hornet Invite

The Tallassee girls softball team extended their win streak to eight in claiming the Hornet Invite championship trophy on Saturday night in Beauregard.

The No. 2 ranked Tigers improved to 24-8-2 with five wins in the tournament. The title victory came against Charles Henderson by a 10-6 score with senior Lexi Love driving in five runs.

Love was 3-for-4 at the plate with a homerun and two doubles. Avary Lumpkin also hit a homer. Brooke Royster went 3-for-3 with a double.

Alexis Walls was the winning pitcher going all seven innings and allowing four earned runs with five strikeouts and five walks.

Tallassee beat Wetumpka in the semifinal 6-2 with Chloe Davidson earning the win giving up one earned run in the five inning performance. She struck out four and walked one. Chloe Baynes led THS at the plate with two hits.

The Tigers opened the tournament on Friday with a 7-6 win against Smiths Station. Baynes had three hits. Love and Royster had two each. Davidson got the win in the circle.

Royster picked up the win in a 12-0 shutout of Russell County. Tallasse had nine hits led by Belle Haynes 3-for-3 day at the plate.

Tallassee topped Smiths Station for the second time in the tourney with a 4-1 victory on Satuday morning. Walls went the distance for the win. Haynes, Davidson and Abbie Davis had two hits a piece. Royster hit a homer.

"We hit the ball while seeing good pitching all weekend," THS head coach Pat Love said. "The team responded well every time we got down and different  players  stepped up thoughout the weekend. It was a great tournament with great competition."

Love's team clinched the regular season area title last week with wins over Beauregard, 9-8 in 11 innings on Tuesday and Brewbaker Tech 14-4 on Thursday. Tallassee takes to the road on Tuesday, April 20 at Beauregard and Thursday, April 22 at Reeltown.
