Tallassee girls World Series runner-up
By Michael Butler
Tallassee's 6u girls narrowly missed giving their hometown its second World Series champion in as many weeks. The 12u Hit Squad won the title a weekend earlier in Panama City Beach, Fla.
The local 6u all-stars were winners of two state champioinship tournaments and opted to play in the Dixie Youth World Series in Perry, Ga.
After reeling off wins over Virginia (14-9) and North Carolina (19-5), the Tallassee squad toppled the host team from Georgia (23-4) to set up a winner's bracket match on Monday against Tennessee.
Tennessee got out to a 10-0 lead that was insurmountable but not by much. Tallassee battled back to get to within a couple of runs at 11-9 after three innings but fell in the end 18-14. The defeat snapped a 21-game win streak.
The loss also dropped the Alabama team into the loser's bracket for an elimination game vs. Louisiana. Tallassee's girls walloped the team from the bayou by a score of 22-4 to set up a rematch with Tennessee.
Tallasseee would have to win twice on Wednesday. A strong contingent made the 155-mile trek east to watch the dynamite dozen vie for the title.
Unlike the first meeting, a seesaw battle ensued with Tallassee taking a 17-13 lead midway through the fourth inning.
Tennessee overcame the defiict to win the nailbiter and championship 20-19 as their fans played "Rocky Top."
On Thursday, Tallassee fans welcomed back their diamond dolls as they rode in on a Tallassee fire truck. Their summer was all but over, but the memories will surely last them and their proud parents and grandparents a lifetime.
