Mask wins state

By Michael Butler

"Words can't describe how proud I am," said John Mask, Tallassee High School swimming coach. Mask is father first to Camden Mask, who won the 100-yard breast stroke in the Class 1A-5A finals of the AHSAA State Swimming and Diving Championships at the Huntsville Aquatics Center on Saturday.

Mask spent three hours a day over the past year in preparation for the feat. He has also won state titles in recreational swimming with the Tiger Sharks.

At the high school level, Mask finished third in the breastroke as a freshman. As a sophomore he was fourth in the breaststroke and 200 individual medley. Last year, he was second in the same two events.

The time of 55.84 in the breast on Saturday was not only tops in 1A-5A but all classifications. Mask, along with teammates Chase Webster, Brady Adams and Braeden Yankey were fourth in the 200 medley relay and sixth in the 400 medley relay, shaving 15 seconds off of their best time in the latter event. As a team, the Tallassee boys were No. 8 overall out of 21 teams. Scottsboro was the 1A-5A champion.

Mask has multiple college offers to swim at the next level and expects to make a decision by Dec. 1.
