Softball team comes up short in regional

By Michael Butler

The Tallassee softball team narrowly missed reaching the state finals tournament, by one run - twice. The Tigers (14-29) lost in the Central Regional final to Beauregard 4-3 and to Marbury in the consolation final 10-9 on May 8 at Lagoon Park in Montgomery.

Tallassee opened play on May 7 with wins over Shelby County 14-7 and Demopolis 3-2. That put the Tigers in the regional final and one win away from advancing to the state.

In the opening-round wins, Cheyann Easterling went 7-for-8 with four RBIs and five runs from the leadoff spot. The freshman hit a team-leading .424 this season. Junior Regan Easterwood batted .361 for the season, leading the team in homeruns with four and RBIs with 42.

Madeline Weldon threw two complete games in the wins over Shelby County and Demopolis. The senior was 2-2 in the circle for the tournament. Weldon and A'keelah Hutchinson are the only two seniors on the roster.

"We're young. We got better each week," said THS head coach Pat Love. "We played a tough schedule. We prided ourselves on getting better each day. There at the end it worked out for us."

The Tigers celebrate beating Elmore County to clinch a post-season spot

The Tigers made the playoffs for the fifth consecutive year minus the Covid year of 2020 when the post-season was canceled.

"Early on in the year, we were making mental mistakes. Later in the year, we found ways to win," said Love, after the Tigers beat top-seed Elmore County in the area tournament, punching their ticket to the playoffs.

At Lagoon Park last week, the THS fan base could be heard throughout the complex, as noted by Verbena High School in a Facebook post.

"Tallassee and Helena had the most school spirit. Tallassee's whole school must have been at the game."
