Basketball season tips this week
By Michael Butler
The Tallassee High School basketball teams tip off their 2022-23 seasons this week. The varsity boys and girls open the slate with BTW Magnate on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at Stumberg Gymnasium. All teams, including the junior varsity, will host Alabama Christian on Thursday, Nov. 17.
Varsity boys coach Keiven Mixson enters his fifth season at Tallassee. He has compiled an 85-41 record with three area tournament titles. He has nine seniors on this year's squad.
"I have probably more depth than I have ever had here at Tallassee but not the dominant player I have had every year," he said. "I have a couple that are capable but time will tell."
The Tigers have a new area alignment with foes Beauregard and Valley.
"We have a chance to be competitive if everyone will be committed and be better disciplined and care about details," Mixson added. "Details win championships and we are a little behind in that category right now.It is my goal to get these guys to be more detail oriented. This group doesn’t have as much room for error as the teams in the past. We have to execute really well this year to be in games."
Assistant coach LD Bell has taken over the varsity girls team but will continue to work with Mixson on the boys side. The two are also working together with the JV team.
"I am extremely proud of these girls," Bell said. "The expectations and hardwork I've been demanding is something very knew for them, but I am glad they have stayed to course. We are a very young team. We are not trying to get it all at once. We know this is going to be a learning process for the girls as well as me.
"What our main focus is is to change the perception that people have on girls basketball at Tallassee, but we know to change that we have to play a type of basketball that people would like to see. I am definitely looking forward to this year and us getting better taking things one day at a time as we try to build this knew brand of lady Tiger basketball."
