Varsity hoops teams pick up first wins

Tallassee's two varsity basketball teams got into the win column on Saturday at BTW Magnate in Montgomery. The boys won 63-49. The girls won 39-32. Both teams opened the season with defeats at the hands of Loachapoka and John Carroll on Tuesday and Friday at Stumberg Gym.

The boys team overcame a double-digit deficit to 'Poka in the season opener but fell 47-46. They lost to John Carroll 54-47. The girls were beaten by Loachapoka 55-22 and John Carroll 48-20.

Watson

The girls win on Saturday was the first at Tallassee for first-year coach Brooke Watson.

"We're hopeful for the future of this team and the program's future," said Watson.

Seniors Jy McKinnon and Janiya Johnson led the way in the victory. McKinnon had 14 points. Johnson added 13.

"Both freshmen, Jhakhia Anderson and Tionna Purter were huge for us down low getting rebounds," Watson said. "Our seventh grader, Cheyann Easterling, stepped up."

The THS boys were led in scoring by Jalyn Daniels with 19 against BTW Magnate. He also had six rebounds. Ziggy Holloway scored 12 with seven rebounds. Kayden Slay and Javarius Kendrick narrowly missed having double-doubles. Slay had nine points and ten boards. Kendrick chipped in eight points and 13 rebounds.

Tallassee is back at home on Tuesday vs. LAMP. The junior varsity game tips off the tripleheader of games beginning at 4:30 p.m.
