One on One with the Coach

Staff Report

*Jacoby Cole sat down with Tallassee head football coach Mike Battles for a Q and A on the upcoming season.

Q: What have you guys been working on this summer?
A: We go in the weight room for about an hour, then we hit the field. Mondays are usually heavy offensive days. Tuesdays are heavy defensive days. Thursdays are more group and team oriented. We went over and played Dadeville. Dadeville and Talladega came over to compete. We're going to Reeltown.

Q: What can we look for this season on both sides of the ball?
A: We're young on offense, so the playbook is scaled down. We're working on some of the starters. Defensively is where our strength is. We've got a lot of upper classmen that have played for a while. The gameplan is to keep us in games early on and our offense gel and move in the right direction.

Q: Since Kalvin Levett is in college right now, who will make an impact this year?
A: There's a lot of guys. It starts at quarterback. We've got two guys working there; Tyler Ellis and Trace Ledbetter. We've got a good group of running backs, but they're young. Our offensive line is all brand new. Truck Griffin is going to have to have a good year on both sides of the ball. Matthew Baker and Napolean Reed and going to have to make some plays.

Q: Are there any teams in the region you should be worried about this year?
A: Everyone of them. We play in an extremely tough region. You've got Beauregard, Charles Henderson, Greenville, Carroll down in Ozark... Everybody we play is good region and non-region.

Q: What are your goals for the upcoming season?
A: We've got a bunch of young kids. Hopefully, we can get them a lot of early game experience and get back to the playoffs.

Tallassee kicks off the season at Catholic in Montgomery on Friday, Aug. 23 at 7 p.m.
