Tigers lose late lead in region defeat

By Michael Butler

It was a homecoming for Tallassee head football coach L.A. O'Neal but not necessarily a happy one. Booker T. Washington (3-0/2-0) turned back the Tigers and their former coach in a 26-21 comeback win on Friday in Tuskegee.

Tallassee (1-2/1-1) built a 21-7 halftime lead but were held scoreless in the second half in their second region game of the season. O'Neal took part in some of the pregame fesitivities where he spent the past three years in his first stint as a head coach that included a semifinal run in the Class 4A playoffs last year.

"We jump out with 21 points in the first half, but don't score in the second half," O'Neal said. "We missed some opportunities. When you're playing a good team like that, you can't miss opportunities."

Tallassee got things started with a couple of big touchdown strikes from Trent Morris to Jordan King of 34 and 36 yards to build a 14-0 lead. Tiny Green's three-yard run in the final seconds of the second quarter made it 21-7, but that was all the scoring for the Tigers on the night.

Morris was 7-of-16 for 117 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. The Tigers lost two fumbles as well totalling four turnovers in the game.

BTW scored 19 of its 26 points in the fourth quarter. Tallassee led 21-19 after a two-point conversion stop at the 4:10 mark of the final frame but fumbled it away on the ensuing drive leaving a short field and 2:12 on the clock. Two plays later, the Eagles were back in the endzone after a 33-yard touchdown pass from Brandon Smith to Javis Floyd.

Green finished with 67 yards on 20 carries. King had four receptions for 76 yards with the two TDs. Courtland Roberts had two catches for 38 yards.

Tallassee will have its home opener on Friday versus Bullock County. The Hornets (2-2/1-1) are winless against THS in the history of the series (0-5-1).

Tallassee's 1984 and 1999 semifinal teams will be honored prior to the game. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. WTLS - Score 94.7/Hit 106.9 will have the broadcast with an air time of 6 p.m. Video will be streamed live on Tallassee Times TV on YouTube.
