O'Neal wins first game as THS coach

By Michael Butler

Tallassee opened Class 4A/Region 3 play at Munford on Friday picking up the team's first victory in dominating fashion, 35-14. It was also the first win for L.A. O'Neal, the Tigers' first-year head coach.

"It feels good," said O'Neal. "It's always good to get that first win, especially with the new job. I'm happy for my kids."

In Tallassee's first two games, the 22-16 loss against Montgomery Academy and the 14-14 incompleted contest against Elmore County, the Tigers fell behind by double digits - 22-0 at MA and 14-0 at EC. That was not the case on Friday, as Tallassee marched down the field on the opening drive punching it in for a touchdown and the first lead of the young season.

The big play was a 3rd-and-12 conversion on a deep pass from Trent Morris to Chase Chumley. It went for 41 yards. Six plays later, Tiny Green found the endzone on a 10-yard run, the first of three TDS on the night for a 7-0 lead. Green finished with 68 yards on 13 carries.

Tallassee led 14-0 after a one-yard run by Green late in the first quarter. After a six-yard scoring pass from Morris to Chumley, Green added a three-yard runnng score for a 28-7 advantage at the half. Morris connected with Jordan King for a two-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter putting Tallassee up 35-7. Morris was 13-of-21 on the night with 195 yards and two TDs.

The comfortable lead early in the third quarter allowed O'Neal to rest some of his starters and allow his reserves to pick up some valuable playing time.

"That's how you build good programs," he said. "If you get your young guys experience where you can get some film study, then you build."

O'Neal will have a homecoming in Tuskegee on Friday as the Tigers (1-1/1-0) go to regional opponent Booker T. Washington, O'Neal's former team. The Eagles are 2-0 and 1-0 in region play. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

WTLS - Score 94.7/Hit 106.9 will have the broadcast with the video webcast on Tallassee Times TV on YouTube. Air time will be at 6.
