Flag football starts this week

By Michael Butler

Flag football became a sanctioned sport with the AHSAA in 2021. This year, there will be 113 participating teams - including Tallassee. The Tigers will field their first flag team.

There are two classifications for the sport in the AHSAA. The largest class combines Class 6A and 7A. Tallassee falls into the 1A-5A classification.

Pat Love is the head coach of the starter program. Most of Love's background at THS has been with softball. Love has eight years of experience as head coach with many of the same girls who will play their opener against Prattville's junior varsity team on Thursday, Aug. 22 at 5:30 p.m. at J. E. "Hot" O'Brien Stadium. However, Love has worked with the middle school football program as well.

There are 13 players on the roster for the inaugural flag football squad.

"We've got speed. Several can catch and throw," Love said. "You can play seven at a time. You can get a lot of girls in. It's fast."

The Tigers received a gift from the NFL's Atlanta Falcons for jerseys. The NFL has provided attire and equipment for many high schools across the country to promote the game.

Tallassee has 11 games scheduled, playing on average about twice a week.

"We've got the makings of having a good team. The girls get after it. It's going to be fun."

WTLS - Score 94.7/Hit 106.9 will broadcast the action on Thursday with video on YouTube. Air time will be 5 p.m.
