Season kicks off with month-long road trip

Another high school football season kicks off this week. At Tallassee, the Tigers welcome new coach L.A. O’Neal.

O’Neal takes over a program that was 1-9 last year, but that doesn’t change his high expectations.

“Our goal is to be 1-0 after every game," he said. "We're not going into any game thinking, 'if we can just stay in the game.' Our goal is to win the game.”

Tallassee will have the chance to truly be 1-0 with its first-ever meeting against Montgomery Academy in the opener on Friday, Aug. 23. It is the first of four straight road games to open the O’Neal era at Tallassee.

“I’m a little different,” the head coach said. “I’m one of those coaches that likes being on the road. I come from an old-school coach. If you had a bully, you wanted to beat that bully on his field.

“With us going on the road and playing some quality ball clubs, it’ll build confidence that we can go on the road and get some quality wins at the beginning of the season.”

O’Neal is optimistic that this team can win and win often.

“Our gameplan is to execute to come out on top. Our kids have bought in. We think we can win every game. And that's the mindset you've got to have."

Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. All games will be broadcast on WTLS - Score 94.7/Hit 106.9 with the videocast on YouTube. Air time is set for 6 p.m. each week.
