Tallassee made it to the quarterfinal round of the playoffs last year

THS football program set for Spring

By Michael Butler

Although there really is no "off-season" anymore, the Tallassee football program did get a short respite since its season ended last November.

"We've been in the weight room since January," head coach Mike Battles said. "We'll start on Wednesday, March 1, with staff meetings getting prepared for spring training. It's good to get a break. I'm sure the kids needed one, but it's time to get back to business. I'm ready to get back."

Last season's Tigers' team made its deepest run in the playoffs since 1999. The team was 9-4 in 2016.

"I really enjoyed the team. We've got a good nucleus of those guys back this year," Battles added.

Practice will begin on April 25.

"We'll go out Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in helmets," said Battles. "We'll come back that following Monday and go full gear for a week. We'll return the next Wednesday in full gear. That Thursday (May 18), we'll travel over to play LaFayette."

Battles and Bulldogs coach James Lucas have become good friends continuing their relationship since Lucas' days at Notasulga.

"I did tell him," Battles recalled, "there was one condition - if (JaTarvious) Whitlow has graduated, we'd come play."

Tallassee got to see Whitlow in last year's spring game. The Class 2A Back of the Year led LaFayette to a 12-1 record last season. He has signed to play college football at Auburn.

"I don't think I've seen a single player that was as phenomenal as he was that Friday that we played them. Auburn's got a special one."
