Baseball team drops trio of games

By Michael Butler

It was a tough week for the Tallassee High School baseball team. After picking up its first win against Montevallo 4-3 on Feb. 19, the Tigers are now on a three-game losing skid with consecutive losses by double-digit margins.

Tallassee (1-4) fell in the home opener vs. Valley on Thursday, 15-5. On Friday, they lost to Wetumpka 12-0 in six innings at Southside Field. On Saturday, the Tigers were defeated by Elmore County in Eclectic 14-3 in five innings.

Against Valley, Mason Stewart and Clayten Gough led the way at the plate with a two hits each. Gough had two RBIs as well.

Wetumpka no hit the Tigers on Friday. On Saturday, Jackson Rhodes had three hits and two RBIs in the loss at Elmore County.

The season is still young according to first-year coach Kyle Hammonds with more stiff competition this week at the FCA Tournament in Montgomery.

"I'm very excited about the FCA tournament," Hammonds said. "This will be my first opportunity to compete in this event. It's a great organization and we are happy to be a part of the tournament."

Tallassee will play Catholic at Paterson Field on Wednesday at 4 p.m. The Tigers play Alabama Christian at Riverwalk Stadium on Thursday at 4 p.m.
