Tigers sweep Trinity, on to the quarters

By Michael Butler

Tallassee advanced to the third round for the first time since 2006 with a sweep of Trinity on Friday at Southside Field, 5-3 and 7-3.

It was in that same year that Tallassee faced UMS-Wright for the first time in a post-season series. The Bulldogs will be this week's quarterfinal opponent for THS on Friday in Mobile.

The Tigers won the second round matchup 11 years ago, 8-0 and 4-2. UMS (21-12), the defending Class 4A champs, swept Handley on Friday, 15-1 and 7-3.

Tallassee (25-13) is attempting to reach the semifinals for the first time since '06. The Tigers last state title came in 1998. The Tigers have seven championships. The Bulldogs have won nine.

Against Trinity, Tallassee did what it did in the first round to Escambia County, stymieing the Wildcats with the pitching of seniors Dee Williams and Will Peters. The tandem teamed up for complete game wins in games one and two.

In the opener, Williams allowed three earned runs and six hits over seven innings, striking out six and walking one. Peters was 4-for-4 at the plate. Casey Baynes hit a three-run homerun to break open a tight game in which the Tigers never trailed.

Peters gave up two earned runs in the nightcap with ten strikeouts and two walks. Williams and Jake Burton went 2-for-4. Kalvin Levett was 2-for-2.

Friday's doubleheader at UMS-Wright will begin at 4:30. A Saturday game (if needed) will start at 1:00.

All playoff action is being broadcast on 1300 WTLS/106.5 FM, Tallassee Times TV, Spectrum Cable Channel 97 and the TuneIn Radio App. Live video is not permitted.
