THS 10-run rules Vols in opener

By Michael Butler

Tallassee broke open a tight game with a seven-run sixth inning on its way to win No. 1 in 2017, 11-1 over Central of Clay County on Monday at Southside Field.

Collier Bonner (1-0) picked up the victory in his first varsity start at THS. Bonner, a lefthander, pitched at Reeltown last season. The junior cruised through four innings allowing just one run with eight strikeouts and one walk.

The Volunteers mustered just two hits in the game, one-a-piece off of Tigers' pitchers Bonner and Casey Baynes. Baynes allowed no runs over two innings, recording a walk and strikeout.

Tallassee got doubles from Blake Dean, Will Peters and Jake Burton. Dean drove in Tallassee's first run in the two-run first. Burton had three RBIs in the seventh. Caleb Stewart had a pinch hit single that scored two. Kalvin Levett also had a single.

The junior varsity Tigers beat Clay Central 10-6 in the first game of the day. Tallassee scored five runs in the sixth inning to overcome a one-run deficit.

The JV and varsity squads have three games remaining in the opening week homestand. Tallassee hosts Russell County on Thursday, Lee on Friday and LAMP next Monday. "Meet the Team" night is Thursday at Southside for the baseball and softball teams.

Varsity baseball games will be broadcast on 1300 WTLS/106.5 FM. Live video will be on Tallassee Times TV. Audio is simulcast on Spectrum Cable Channel 97 and the TuneIn Radio App.
