Ansley at last year's camp

Ansley camp returns

By Michael Butler

Derrick Ansley will be back in town for his second annual "Driven Athletes Youth Football Camp" on Saturday, June 29 from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. at J. E. "Hot" O'Brien Stadium.

The inaugural event was a great success last year.

"Year one was fun," Ansley said. "It's not as much work to put the camp together if you have good people around you as we did. Randy Bryant, who is one of my good friends from Troy, and Brandon Hall, who played with me at Troy, helped put the camp together and organize it. We had a ton of support from the community."

That support included former coaches and players, who will return this year. Plus, there were more than 200 campers last year who participated.

"We had a good number and I think we'll have more this year according to our pre-registration numbers. I'm looking forward to making it better, giving those kids something to look forward to every summer."

Kids from 6-14 are welcome to attend. There is no fee. Lunch will be provided and prizes awarded.

Ansley brought a few NFL players last year and plans to bring a few more this year.

"If I could've met an NFL player at that age, it would've really impacted me. We're going to have NFL players and coaches helping with the drills. We'll have some college guys and high school guys coaching.

"So, we're trying to find innovative ways to give back and help those kids realize they can do anything they want to do in life. Their goals are not unattainable. Anything is possible. I came from the same community that they did."
