Tallassee's 6U girls on July 9 in Alex City after wining the state title

Babe Ruth stars' run ends at regionals/girls go to World Series

By Michael Butler

The Tallassee Babe Ruth all-stars bid for the World Series in Washington came up short at Regionals in Andalusia. Regardless, the title of state champions will remain.

The group of 14- and 15-year-olds dropped the opener to Fort Smith, Ark. on Friday, 9-2. On Saturday, Denver City, Texas knocked the Tallassee boys from the tournament with an 11-7 win.

This weekend, the Tallassee 6U Dixie Youth all-stars will wear Alabama on their jerseys as they play in the World Series in Alexandria, La. beginning on July 27. Alexandria is 519 miles from Tallassee. The more than seven hour trek will begin at approximately 5 a.m. on Friday. Tallassee's first game is at noon on Saturday vs. South Carolina.

Four girls; Jazlyn "Cookie" Fitzpatrick, Zadie Stephens, McCall Clayton and Kylie Taylor were on last year's state championship team that traveled to Alexandria and placed third in the World Series. This is the third straight 6U team from Tallassee to win the Dixie Youth state title.

"I think we've got a good chance," coach Ron Taylor said. "These girls play great defense. We've got some good hitting too. Last year we ran into a buzzsaw. We've got a good shot. I think we may be that team this year.

The field includes seven teams with Tallassee representing Alabama. The other contenders are host team Rapides East, South Carolina, Lousiana, Tennessee, Mississippi and Virginia.

"It's been a great summer," coach Adam Clayton said. "It's a close knit bunch that have really latched on to all these girls. They've done a tremendous job and worked really hard. Hopefully we can finish strong and win the World Series."
