Relay event this week with new locale

Staff Report

This year's "Relay for Life" will be at a new location, Tallassee City Hall. The annual event to raise funds for the American Cancer Society is Friday, April 28 from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

"The location was changed to better accommodate the survivors and their caregivers," said Felicia Tyus, Community Manager for the Relay.

Tallassee's goal for this year is $70,000. "We are still in need of donations," said Tyus. "We are quite a bit from the goal."

This year’s theme is “The Colors of Cancer,” "because each type of cancer is represented by their own color." Teams and sponsors are decorating their tents and wearing shirts to support the type of cancer that they want to raise awareness about.

Tyus added that this year's event will focus on the survivors and the walk.

"We are encouraging all survivors to please participate."

Luminarias are still available to honor and remember for $5 each and will be displayed at the Survivors' Relay event. As always, a number of activities are planned including various singing groups.

Another addition this year is a family softball tournament.

"Sponsors, churches and community groups are coming together to host a (it)," Tyus noted. "The game will take place on Saturday, May 20."

If you are wanting to participate, contact Vickie Spivey at 334-707-6370 vspivey@chal.org or Tyus at 334-531-1093 or Felicia.tyus@cancer.org.
