Longtime Tallassee Businessman Passes

By Michael Butler

Albert Elmore has passed away. The local insurance agent was 91.

Elmore worked with State Farm since 1960. The last 26 years were spent in Tallassee.

His father, Albert Sr., was a former football player and coach, and he followed in his footsteps.

Albert Sr. played at the University of Alabama in 1929 and 30. He coached at Troy State from 1931-36 and Virginia Military Institute from 1937-38.

Albert Jr. was a graduate of Troy High School and graduated from the University of Alabama as a three-year letterman. In 1954, the quarterback, who preceded Bart Starr, set a school record at the time for the longest touchdown pass, 87-yards to Bobby Luna against Tulsa. Elmore later served as a graduate assistant under Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant.

His obituary notes that he shot his age in golf more than a thousand times. He was a former president and board member with the Alabama Golf Association.

He and his wife, Lee Gayle of Selma, would have celebrated their 70th anniversary this June.
