Youth On Display with Track Team

By Michael Butler

Of 31 student-athletes on the Tallassee track and field team, just four are seniors: Mark Griffin, Antonio Hooks, Tra’mel McCoy and Gabriel McCary.

Tallassee had nine state qualifiers last year, including Griffin and McCoy. Sophomore Milaki Griffin was state qualifier too and returns. State qualifier and senior Jaden McKenzie is out due to injury. Another couple of juniors made state last year but are currently with the baseball team, Jayden Griggs and Trent Morris.

“The team is anchored by veteran leadership,” said head coach Danny Worley. “The roster features many young athletes learning the ins and outs of track and field.”

Worley can already see progress.

“Several athletes have recorded personal-best performances,” he said. “(We’re) eager to see how much (they) can grow.”

Worley is optimistic as sectionals approach next month in Tuscaloosa. Another reason for optimism is with the development of a new track complex on the campus of Tallassee Elementary School. The THS track and field program has been unable to host meets during Worley’s entire tenure.

“They’re making progress every day. They’ve already installed pole vault, long and triple jump pits. We’re excited. The kids deserve a safe, first-class facility.”

The facility will feature an eight-lane, all-weather 400-meter track and double runways for the long jump and triple jump. Tallassee will be start holding meets next season.
