Another banner year on the wrestling mats has come to a close. Tallassee finished third at the season-ending tournament in Huntsville, just missing out on its second team championship of the season. Still, three individuals won state titles.
Thomas Patterson (113), Avery Brantley (150) and Tra’mel McCoy (175) were first in their weight classes for the boys’ team. The girls finished sixth overall.
The boys went 41-1 in duals matches and claimed the duals state title for the second straight year in Birmingham in January. On Saturday, Weaver won the boys and girls championships.
“This was truly a year to remember,” said THS head coach John Mask. “These young men overcame numerous obstacles, stayed committed to the process and accomplished goals they set from the beginning.”
For Patterson and McCoy, it marked consecutive individual championships. It was the first for Brantley, a senior.
“I wanted to score a lot of points,” Brantley said. “I just wanted to be dominant. I wanted to make this one count and that’s what I did.”
Brantley finished with a 50-7 record. He was 4-0 in Huntsville with a pin and three technical fall wins.
McCoy, another senior, capped a perfect 50-0 season with his second title. He had two pins and a technical fall victory over the three-day tournament.
“It was great,” McCoy said. “It was great competition. I had to work hard. I prayed a lot. That’s the reason I won. Jesus Christ is king.”
Patterson recorded two wins by decision and added a pin during the tourney. He went 55-1 in his junior year, so he will have a chance as for a three-peat next season.
“It was definitely not an easy path,” he said. “I was pumped to get my second title.”

Brady Adams (157) earned a spot on the podium with a third-place finish. Other placers were Dylan Alvarez (120 – 4th), Braxton Alvarez (106 – 5th), Dylan Price (126 – 6th) and AJ Henry (215 – 6th).
The Tallassee girls had three state placers. Kaylee Fannin (235) was third. Abbi Carwile (126) was fourth. Sparrow Sgarlata (132) was fourth.
The girls went 17-3 in duals matches in Brooke Barron’s first season as head coach.
“There is a familial atmosphere among the girls and the families,” Barron said. “They take care of each other. They also take care of Coach Brent (Tennyson) and me. I cannot say enough positive things about this special group.”
