There has not been much happening on the waterfront at the East Tallassee mill property over the past year. According to Tallassee mayor Joey Wiginton, that is about to change.
“People are going to see some activity,” said Wiginton, who spoke with the property owner last week. “He’s still planning on doing a steak restaurant. That’s phase one. Then he’s going to do the mini mill houses that people can rent.”
Some of those plans have been unveiled on the Mt. Vernon Project Facebook page. On Dec. 31, a post wishing a happy new year also noted, “looking forward to good things this year.”
Wiginton said he was told that what is left from a fire that destroyed the former textile mill in May 2016 is unsalvageable for reuse.
“It’s in such bad shape,” Wiginton noted. “He’s going to knock it down and grind it up. They’ll be starting in the next few weeks. Then he’s going to clean up and start the restaurant. He said in March he’d have the chef here.”
Wiginton wants the train trestle bridge to eventually reopen as well.
“We’ve got to get it where at least we can walk on it. We’ve got to get an engineer to look at it.”
Wiginton added that if the new restaurant comes to fruition, the bridge could be incorporated with it for seating.

Will the developers sell some of the granite stones from the mill walks? Seems to me a good idea. … like the flat stones Delmar dug out of the river and made the circular planter in his yard.

Great. I call on the Mayor to pledge not a single building permit or business license be issued till the entire mill complex has been demolished and cleaned up. Quite frankly when someone says in phases what will really happen is the second phase or 3rd phase will never come to fruition. Mr. Mayor we have your guarantee that the site will be cleaned completely before any permit or business license are granted correct?

seems more likely it’s turned into the fraud that the Tallassee Airport was, took 30 years and the Federal Government threatened to take back the million dollar grant that no one seems to know what happened to…… time will always tell the truth…..
