Hoops Teams Win Area Openers

By Michael Butler

Tallassee’s two varsity basketball teams tipped off area play with 30-point wins on Wednesday night against L.A.M.P. in Montgomery. Ironically, both the girls and boys won by identical scores, 58-28.

“The girls (3-3/1-0) had won pretty convincingly,” said THS boys coach L.A. O’Neal. “I didn’t even look up at our score. I get a call from my pops. He’s like, ‘did y’all play the exact same game. Y’all won by the same score as the girls.’ The guys are playing some good ball. The girls are as well.”

O’Neal just took over the boys’ program (2-5/1-0) and is balancing his duties as head football coach, although currently in the off-season for his gridiron position.

“It’s made my day a little bit longer,” he said. “We’re still focusing on lifting. Coming off of last season we realize we’ve got to get stronger. The guys are really dedicated to the weight room.”

The basketball team returns to area play Friday night, Jan. 9 on the road at Montgomery Catholic. The junior varsity Tigers will start at 4:30 followed by the varsity teams.
