One of the most beloved holiday films is Frank Capra’s, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” featuring Jimmy Stewart’s portrayal of George Bailey. The Mount Vernon Performing Arts Center is bringing the classic tale to the stage in a radio play this December.
It is being directed by Michaela Bird.
“It’s set in the 1940s with a fresh take on the story that everyone has come to love,” Bird said. “I’m super excited. Mount Vernon is a beautiful space. It’s a historical landmark for Tallassee. It’s a match made in heaven.”
Bird is the new theater director at Tallassee High School. She works hand in hand with Caleb Beard, the new men’s choir director at THS. The two are also working together on the Mount Vernon production, with Beard playing the part of George Bailey.
“I’ll bring a little variation of the Jimmy Stewart accent,” Beard said. “That performance with Jimmy Stewart is so iconic. It’ll be a little different. He did it on a film screen. We’re doing it on a stage. It’s been one of my favorite movies. I love his performance, so I’m excited to get to read it.”

Bird has family playing parts as well. Her father Michael Bird, who also served as men’s choir director at THS and now works at Faulkner University, is playing the roles of Mr. Potter and Uncle Billy.
“He’s never done live theater before,” Michaela said. “He’s doing a great job. He’s having to switch voices back and forth. My sister Abbey (Achord) is playing Mary. Being able to work with my family has been so incredible. You get to see the little nuances that we share.”
The play will be on Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 13 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. For tickets, visit the Mount Vernon Performing Arts Center Facebook page.
