Wiginton Takes Office Next Week

By Michael Butler

The new mayor, city council and school board will be sworn in at Tallassee City Hall on Monday, Nov. 3.

“I’m just so excited for Tallassee,” said mayor-elect Joey Wiginton. “We’re fixing to make a turn for the better.”

Since the Aug. 26 election, Wiginton has been meeting with members of the council to discuss his upcoming term.

There will be two new council members. Carpenter Easterling is taking over for Jeremy Taunton in Ward 1. In Ward 6, Sarah Jones is replacing Bill Godwin.

“I’ve got about 35 (ideas) written down,” Wiginton said. “I want to open up that river. People could ride their bikes down there. We can walk down there. We can put in benches and solar lights. I can see a young couple sitting on that bench with that beautiful water. All of a sudden, he hits his knee and says, ‘I’d love to marry you.’ I can see that happening because it’s such a beautiful setting.

“Things I see are really simple, not spending a lot of money but opening up what we’ve got.”

Wiginton noted that he would like to be proactive in soliciting business for Tallassee.

“I’m going to be going out several times a week and visiting other towns and getting businesses in here. We’ve got to talk to people.”

Wiginton is open to making the mayor’s position full-time again.

“It’s whatever the city council wants me to do. I work for them and the citizens. I want to work.”
