Wiginton Wins

Joey Wiginton will be Tallassee’s next mayor. Wiginton beat Mayor Sarah Hill 529-237 garnering 69 percent of votes cast.

“I’m just so excited for Tallassee,” Wiginton said. “We’re fixing to make a turn for the better. We had probably 150 people here at the theater. People are ready. It’s been a good ride. I’m tired and blistered. It was so much fun being out at Five Points hearing everybody blow and holler at us. I could tell my folks were coming out to vote.”

Wiginton, 68, retired from Faulkner University, his alma mater, as Assistant to the President over Alumni Relations. He also served as a Senior Fundraiser, Director of Admissions and Vice President of Student Services. The Childersburg native has been married to Nancy (Couch) for 46 years. They have five children and 11 grandchildren.

“I knocked on a lot of doors,” he said. “The people I got to meet were ready for change.”

Wiginton received 286 votes at the Tallaweka Baptist Church to 159 for Hill. At the East Tallassee Community Library, Wiginton got 213 votes to 57 for Hill. The edge for Wiginton at God’s Congregational Holiness Church in Jordanville was 25-14.

Wiginton will take office on Nov. 3.

There were two council races. Sarah Jones topped Rosemary Glass in Ward 6. Jones got 99 votes to 63 for Glass.

“It was great hearing the news. My girls jumped up and screamed,” Jones said. “About two years ago I was sitting at a city council meeting while my oldest was getting recognized for state swim. I just felt a call to run and found out my ward was going to be vacant. I’ve been going to council meetings trying to prepare. I’m just happy to have this opportunity now.”

Incumbent for Ward 5, Terrel Brown won his re-election bid over Jeffery Wilcox 56-24.

“I want to thank my constituents for trusting me to continue serving Ward 5 and the city of Tallassee,” Brown said. “I am looking forward to four more years of progress and economic development for our city. I want to continue to be an open ear for our citizens. I will always stay approachable and willing to listen to all of my constituents.”

Turnout dropped considerably since the 2020 municipal election. There was a total of 766votes cast on Tuesday compared to 1,171 in 2020.
