There is an old adage. “When it rains it pours.” That was the case in Tallassee’s season opener on Friday night.
Although showers ended right before kickoff, Montgomery Academy brought in a storm of their own in a resounding 59-3 victory.
It was the most lopsided setback ever by a THS team at J.E. “Hot” O’Brien Stadium, which had a new look with its brand new coat of prescription turf and digital scoreboard. The 56-point loss tied the largest loss overall, a 56-0 defeat at Lanett in 1994.
“You get beat in all three phases of the game, you get embarrassed,” Tallassee head coach L.A. O’Neal said. “It should hurt. We’ll go to work on Monday.”
The Eagles scored early and often building a 28-0 lead after the first quarter.
Tallassee finished the first half with one first down, crossing the 50-yard line just once. MA had 21 first downs and 290 yards of total offense after two quarters with a 42-0 lead.
Turnovers cost Tallassee in last year’s 22-16 loss in Montgomery with five total. The Tigers turned it over three times this go-round.
Yuren Rodriguez provided one of the few highlights on the night connecting on a 44-yard field goal in the third quarter.

Rival Elmore County comes to Tallassee next week.
“Looks like we were looking to that game instead of this one,” O’Neal added.
Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. Airtime on WTLS – Score 94.7/Fun 101.1 and Tallassee Times TV on YouTube will be 6 p.m.
