Usually, a program takes its lumps in its first season. That was not the case with the advent of flag football at Tallassee High School last season.
The Tigers went 12-2-1 and reached the semifinals in their inaugural season. In fact, Pat Love’s team was a touchdown away from playing for a state championship. Catholic, who topped THS 6-0 in Montgomery, went on to beat Moody for the Class 1A-5A state title.
“We were really good,” said Love. “We were good at receiver, running back, quarterback. Our defense got really good in the playoffs. We’ve got the majority of the girls back. That’s the goal for this year.
“They’re ready to play now. We’re so much further along than we were last year. A lot of coaches told me that year two would be a lot better with their knowledge. It’s going to be exciting to watch us.”
Right off the bat, Tallassee will see where it stands. Love has scheduled a jamboree at Central Phenix City for Thursday, Aug. 14. The Red Devils were not only last year’s 6A-7A champs, they were also ranked No. 1 in the nation.
“They’ve won the last two years. If you want to be the best you’ve got to play the best. They’ll be the best team we’ll play all year. It’s going to be good for us. It’s a jamboree. We’re not just lining up and playing four straight quarters. It’s going to be more like a practice. We’re going to learn a lot.”

Tallassee returns many of its starters from last year. One is making the transition to quarterback. Cheyann Easterling is stepping in for the now-graduated Regan Easterwood.
“She’s got a big-time arm. She can throw it deep. We’ve got some receivers who can go get it.”
Love spoke of playmakers Reese Gough, London O’Neal, Kam Tate, Marlee Osborne and Jaaliyah Williams, several who will be getting action on both sides of the ball like Abbi Carwile.
“She was a phenomenal rusher, had a lot of sacks. She’s going to play some offense. Jordyn Morris is going to play some receiver some and defensive back. We’ve got a roster that can compete.”
As for a blue map being added to the trophy case…
“I think we have a chance,” Love said. “If we continue to grow and get better everyday, we can be there.”
