Volleyball Tigers Prep for Season

By Michael Butler

The Tallassee High School volleyball team starts its season on Aug. 25 at Holtville.

“We’ve worked out all summer,” said head coach Jill Manning. “Monday was our first official day of practice. It’s looking pretty good.”

Manning has just nine players with the varsity. Four are seniors.

“It’s a great group,” she said. “The girls are tough. They know what they’re doing. They just need to put it together. I’m excited to see what they can do.”

The schedule includes area opponents Prattville Christian, LAMP and Booker T. Washington.

“It’s tough, but we do have some teams that we don’t normally play. Our area games are super important.”

Manning is hoping consistency will lead to wins on the floor.

“We’ve got to boost them up. After each play, we’re coming together. There are six girls on the court. They have to all be mentally ready.”

A lot of athletes at Tallassee play multiple sports. Usually those come in different seasons. With volleyball, Manning has some players who are juggling schedules.

“I’ve got a couple that play flag football. Pat Love and I coach softball together. We work on sharing time with practice and games. We make sure our schedules don’t conflict too much. We have some on the dance team. You’ve got those things that overlap.”
