VFW to Observe Flag Day

By Michael Butler

The Tallassee VFW Post 5035 will have a Flag Day observance on Saturday, June 14 at 6 p.m.

“Thank goodness for our flags,” said VFW member Marilyn Durham. “We’re going to be retiring flags. Have you driven around town and seen flags needing changed out? It’s time to get new ones.”

Collection points are set up throughout Tallassee. Locations include Super Foods, First Methodist Church and Walmart.

“We’re offering everybody the opportunity. A retirement ceremony is held every year by the VFW. When the ceremony is over, we burn the flags. That’s the best use for them at that point in time. It’s respectful.”

Durham said she expects about 50 flags to be retired.

“Anybody who would like to come is welcome,” she said. “The Post has a beautiful overlook of Lake Talisi. I’m always fascinated.”
