Blockbuster Summer at Mount Vernon

By Michael Butler

The Mount Vernon Performing Arts Center has filled the calendar for June and July with a plethora of activities headlined by a summer movie series. The lineup kicks off with the flick “The Sandlot” on Monday, June 2 at 10 a.m.

There will be multiple movies each week at varying times for seven weeks.

“We’re going to try every week to do a movie at 10 for some of the kids,” said owner Joey Wiginton. “Friday nights will be sort of a date night with a 7:00 show. We’ve got a 35-foot screen. It’s just different especially if you sit close. You feel like you’re in the movie.”

Tickets will be $7 for ages seven and up and $5 for six and under.

“We hope to have good crowds, so we can keep it going.”

There are also two youth theater camps scheduled. The first is for ages 8-15 and will be June 9-13 with a showcase on the final day at 5:30 p.m. The next camp will be for those 14-18 and will be June 23-27 with a showcase also on the final day at 5:30 p.m. Camps are $150 per person. “We’re doing other stuff,” Wiginton added. “In August, we’ve got Elvis and a talent show.”
