Those who visit the Riverwalk on the Tallapoosa River in Tallassee have noticed some changes recently. Alabama Power Company, which owns the property, has been upgrading access points.
“One of the things we always look for at our recreation sites are ways to enhance what we call barrier-free upgrades,” said Garret Parker, team leader of shoreline recreation for APC. “That site was in need of meeting some of the current standards for accessibility.”

A good portion of the work has been completed on the pathways from the parking area to the launching pier and bathrooms.
“We’ve still got one more piece of the pathway to pour down to the boat ramp,” Parker added. “It’s close. I’m hoping we’ll be done with it by March. We’ll do a finish coat on the asphalt parking lot.”

The Riverwalk opened in 2001 through a partnership with Alabama Power and the City of Tallassee. The city maintains the property.
“The city is thankful to Alabama Power for bringing this facility to ADA compliant standards,” said Tallassee Parks and Recreation Director Eric Phillips. “Now, everybody is able to use it.”
