Mr. Robert “Big Smitty” Smith, a resident of Tallassee, Alabama, entered full eternal rest on Sunday, August 19, 2018, at the age of 80.
Robert was born to the late Amzie Smith and Florence Jefferson on December 1, 1937. He was raised by his step mother, the late Inez Smith.
Big Smitty went to R.R. Moton High School where he was the first black football player to make All State in Alabama. He played football, basketball, baseball and played softball with the Super Train. He was a longtime employee at Tallassee Mills.
Funeral services will be Saturday, August 25, 2018, at 1:00PM from Mt. Zion Baptist Church with Pastor James Oliver officiating. Burial will follow in Tuckabatchee Cemetery, Jeffcoat Funeral Home directing.
Mr. Smith is survived by his seven children, Carnetha Ann Jackson (Warren Launendale), Teresa Smith Daniel (Carvel Hornsby), Cartrisia Smith (Jeremy), Rodney Smith (Debra), Katrina Smith (Henry Ross) all of Tallassee, Alabama, Robert Paul Smith (Tracey Bronson) of Tuskegee, Alabama, Barry Smith (Nicole) of Atlanta, Georgia; sister, Joann Moore; favorite cousins, Izay Mae Gullery and Trudy Washington; brother-in-law, Roosevelt Stokes: his best friends, Charles and Erma Joe Williams; two sister-in-laws, 28 grandchildren, 64 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
Robert is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Mrs. Catherine Turner “Tee” Smith and his 3 brothers, Bobby and Amizia Smith, L.D. Moore and Dayton Ohio.
The family will receive friends Friday, August 24, 2018, at Jeffcoat Funeral Home from 5:00 PM until 7:00PM.
